Chocolate Milk Straws

Am I the only one who remembers very specific snacks I ate after school as a kid? Maybe I was extremely hungry, really in need of some calm time, or ready to fuel up and quickly finish homework so that I could go outside and play. Chocolate milk was one of my all-time-favorite after school snacks and my Mom made the best chocolate milk. Today we created a homemade version of Chocolate Milk Straws! They are so cool! Food should be fun and school afternoons call for a cold glass of chocolate milk….

Kids come home from school a little bit tired, just like adults come home from work a little bit tired. However, kids can have enough energy to play for the rest of the day as long as they have food and a little relaxation between activities. Making these homemade chocolate milk straws provided a little bit of concentration, a little bit of creativity, and a lot of fun! It kept their hands busy and their minds focused. The payoff was a wholesome glass of icy cold chocolate milk!

For Homemade Chocolate Milk Straws, you will need:

  • Straws (preferably wider straws as opposed to very slim straws)
  • 1 chocolate bar
  • 1 bowl for melting
  • 1 Plastic baggie
  • 2 Cups (one for milk and one to hold a plastic baggie open as pictured below)
  • Horizon 2% Organic Milk
  • Scissors
  • Wooden skewer
  • Paper Towels
  • 1 spoon

How to make Homemade Chocolate Milk Straws!

To make Homemade Chocolate Milk Straws:

  1. Gather all of the supplies and create a workspace for your kids before starting.
  2. Melt a couple squares of chocolate in the microwave for about 20 seconds, stirring every 10 seconds.
  3. Place the corner of a plastic baggie over a cup and pour the melted chocolate into the corner of the baggie.
  4. Cut off a tiny piece of the corner of the bag to let the melted chocolate come out.
  5. Have your kids slowly squeeze some melted chocolate into both ends of each straw.
  6. Show your kids how to use the wooden skewer to push the chocolate through the straw. This keeps the straw from getting clogged and it helps cover the entire inside of the straw with chocolate!
  7. Before the chocolate dries and hardens inside the straw (it takes about 15 minutes for it to dry), place the straw into a cold, creamy glass of Horizon organic milk!

The chocolate will mix with the milk inside the straw and your kids will LOVE IT!!!

My kids discovered that 2 straws in their cups was more fun, and I could’t blame them. I probably would have done the same thing as a kid! You can see that they decided to put a little bit of chocolate around the top of each straw just for fun. That was a great idea!

Horizon milk has 8 grams of protein and is 30% calcium. It’s so creamy and pairs perfectly with some homemade chocolate milk straws!

How fun is that?! After school snack time is when we relax, get some protein, and gear up for the rest of our busy afternoon. I love that this snack kept my kids busy and sparked some at the same time!
