Recipes to Make with Kids

We spend a lot of time in our kitchen baking, reading recipes from cook books, recreating recipes we found online, and even making up dishes as we go. When we want to relax, we all like watching fun cooking shows about making food!

Today I am sharing some our favorite recipes that I think you and your kids will enjoy making together! Cooking and baking can be done as a team, and my favorite team involves my kids. They actually help out a lot and it’s fun to see them try new things that we cook together. Teaching your kids how to cook exercises math skills, reading skills, listening skills, and helps kids focus on the various senses (like taste, smell, and touch).

Fun and Easy Recipes to Make with Kids! Recipes for colorful and delicious cookies plus granola bars, candy dots, and even some casseroles to serve a crowd. My kids LOVE to help me cook!

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not a professional chef. However, I am a professional mom and so was my mom. We just know how to bake a fabulous cookie or put together a pretty casserole. As moms, we teach those recipes to our kids.

One of our favorite cooking shows to watch as a family is MASTERCHEF JUNIOR. The new season of MASTERCHEF JUNIOR premieres November 6th on Fox (click here for more details). Just like MASTERCHEF, the contestants are challenged to create recipes but the MASTERCHEF JUNIOR series has an extra special twist:

#1 The contestants are kids (which makes it really fun for my kids to watch)

#2 The award winning chefs, like Gordon Ramsay, Graham Elliot, and Christina Tosi are not only judges, the actually help coach and teach the kid contestants throughout the season.

How FUN would it be to have Gordon Ramsay teach you about cooking?! I’m jealous! But, that’s why we love to watch MASTERCHEF JUNIOR. Our whole family gets to learn along with the kids. The season starts out with 24 young chefs, ages 8-13, as they showcase their passion for cooking through delicious challenges. In the end, one kid is name America’s newest MASTERCHEF JUNIOR and takes home a $100,000 grand prize. The competition for this big prize is so good throughout the season!

See the MASTERCHEF JUNIOR premiere on Fox this Friday November 6th at 8/7 central. We’ll be watching too!

Here are some of our favorite recipes that my kids and I have made together here at Smart School House. We know you will love all of these! Click the picture or the title to see the full recipe. Be sure to save your favorites on Pinterest for later!

  1. I like to bake with my girls, so they usually add the ingredients and mix and then pour the batter

  2. My favorite way to cook with our kids is cooking recipes that have 6 ingredients or less, like Sloppy Joes & 3-Ingredient Peanut Butter Cookies I do also love cooking more difficult recipes with our kids that have been in the family for years so they learn how to make our family favorites! So we don’t have a disaster, I never let them measure over the dish we are preparing. I give them a paper plate to measure ingredients out over in case they spill over.

  10. My favorite way to cook with my boys is to let each one have a turn in deciding what we’ll make.

  13. My favorite way to cook with kids is let them pick what they want to make. from choosing recipe to shopping for ingredients. As you say, the picky eaters aren’t too picky after they made their meals. I love them in the kitchen helping out. 🙂

  14. Decorating cookies is a great way to start even the youngest cooks. My daughter gave each one of her children one day a week to cook for the family. They started with simple things like hot dogs and as they got older they got more creative. They are all great cooks today.

  15. I am very lucky that my sons love cooking with me! From picking peppers from our little garden, to slicing potatoes, and their favorite, baking & decorating! My son pretty much baked and decorated his birthday cake with help from his mama of course =)

  16. We also always like doing pizzas. I give them each dough and let them make individual pizzas with the toppings of their choice.

  17. When they’re little I do the measuring and let them pour the stuff together and stir (or assemble). As they get older they can do the measuring and learn to crack the eggs, etc.

  18. Once a week we have a cookie bar…let me explain. I make the dough up while the kids are in school and crush, chop and prepare the “fillers”. They usually include various nuts, all sorts of chocolate chips, chopped candy bars/cookies (like Oreos), dried fruit, marshmallows and sometimes pretzels, potato chips and even bacon! Everyone gets a bowl with cookie dough and they stir in their selected items. I put the cookies on a tray and bake them while we eat dinner. By the time our stomach settles from dinner the cookies are set and still a bit warm and gooey.

  19. I have my granddaughter help me every night while making dinner to measure items, etc. We also take 1-2 weekends a month and bake a new recipe.

  20. My daughter loves to measure out the ingredients and mix them into the mixing bowl for cookies!

  21. I like to mix the ingredients myself, then have them help with things like rolling cookie dough into balls, etc. That way we all have a good time.

  22. In the summer, we’d pick veggies from the garden and then roast them. Easy way to get them excited about the meal!

  23. I like making baked goods with kids. It’s usually fairly simple, it’s easy to find ways for them to help and they love the finished product so it’s easy to get them into it.

  24. My favorite way to cook with daughter is to have her help measure out ingredients, roll out dough or cookie dough to make cookies and find ingredients in the fridge and kitchen. I also have her mix ingredients in a bowl.

  25. They love pouring the chocolate chips in the batter when we make cookies

  26. I like to let my daughter help me bake desserts. I let her add the ingredients and use the mixer.

  27. Now that my son can read, I’ve given him a kids’ cookbook. I love to let him pick out what he wants to make.

  28. These are such fantastic ideas to get kids in the kitchen helping. We love creating things together especially things we can sit down and enjoy together as a family.

    Thank you for the post!

  29. I encourage my children by letting them chop vegetables, measure ingredients and mix cakes

  30. I like to get the kids involved with cooking and that begins at the store. We make our shopping list and pick out recipes that are easy for the kids to make and make meals that they will enjoy making and eating together as a family. One recipe we love is Kids Favorite meatloaf. They just love making it!

  31. We like to cook with our kids when we make vegetable sushi; the kids have fun rolling them up.

  32. I have my kids help with measuring by using measuring cups and spoons. They also love to stir items or toss salads. They also help me wash veggies and fruits.

  33. My favorite way to cook with kids is to make homemade pizzas together with lots of fun healthy toppings.
