The 4th of July Banner Craft

The 4th of July is such a fun time to try a banner craft! The weather is usually sunny and warm and it is sure to be a time when you might be entertaining! If you are ready to try a glittery fun craft for the 4th of July, then this doily banner is the perfect choice!
The 4th of July Banner Craft

This is what my glitter doily banner looks like in my garden. I strung the banner up between the wooden stakes that prop up my sunflowers and {baby} artichoke plants. I love how the sun catches the glitter when the banner sways in the wind and it makes me so excited for the 4th of July!

Luckily, like all of the Craft and DIY tutorials you can find here on Smart School House, this banner craft is easy peasy!
You will need:
white card stock
scissors
plain white glue
paper doilies
a pen
blue and red glitter
string
hot glue gun
Step 1: Trace the doily shape onto white card stock with a pen (or pencil). Don’t worry about the color of the pen, you will cut that off later.

Step 2: I used a sponge paint brush to paint the white glue onto 1/2 of the doily shape that you outlined.  TIP: be very liberal with the glue. Meaning- make a thick layer of glue!  There’s no need to have it dripping with glue, but a decently thick layer will do. Trust me. I’ll tell you why later:)

Step 3: Now you need to place the paper doily back onto the card stock (over the glue). Press down on the edges of the doily where the glue is. TIP: make sure the edges are held down by the glue!

Step 4: This is my favorite part of the 4th of July banner craft! Sprinkle on some glitter! You only need to sprinkle the glitter onto the area where there is glue beneath the doily. No need to waste glitter, right?!  I always find a need for glitter: you can see why here, here, and oh yea, here.

Step 5: This is where you want to be careful! Remember back up at Step 2 when I mentioned being liberal with the glue? Well, let me tell you why! If you accidentally only used a little bit of glue, your doily will now be drying to the card stock making it too difficult to remove. But, if you used a thicker layer of glue on Step 2 then your paper doily will pull away from the card stock easily. TIP: peel it back carefully because you don’t want to have glitter flying everywhere! I pulled the doily off in the direction of the glitter. In the picture below, I peeled it off from left to right. It is also very important to let the glue dry completely now! I let mine sit in my craft room for about 3 hours or so. Once it is dry, simply cut the edges off of the doily to remove any pen or pencil marks that you made while tracing back in Step 1.

Step 6: Now you simply fold your DRIED glitter doily in 1/2. Using a glue gun, glue some string to the inside of the folded doilies. I strung mine in a blue/red pattern.

There you have it! The 4th of July will look so ca-ute at your house!! As you can see, I adorned one of the wooden poles with a burlap bow. Why? Because I love burlap. And I love bows. And they love each other too:) Even though this banner craft is glittery, it sort of has a rustic feel to it when you hang it outside with some plants. I looooove the way it looks next to our wooden chicken coop. Don’t you?
