Welcome to Smart School House! Today I have a beautiful outdoor DIY to share with you. This glowing watering can with lights is so beautiful and SO easy to make! Pick a special spot in your garden or yard (maybe even your fairy garden) where you’d like to hang these glowing lights pouring from a watering can. It’s gorgeous and unique!

Materials for Making a Watering Can with String Lights
• Watering can like these with removable shower head. Here’s a tip (and I tried this the wrong way first LOL), make sure the watering can is large enough. If it is too small, it will be nearly impossible to get any lights into it properly.

Fairy Lights – this set of lights is perfect and so is this set (the prices change often!).

Shepard’s hook like this or a hanging flower basket hook like this

Screwdriver (or tool of choice) to widen the hole in the watering can’s the showerhead. If the holes in your watering can are large enough to slide the lights through, then you’re good to go! However, the couple of watering cans that I tried when attempting this both needed to have the holes widened.
How to Make a Watering Can with Lights
Gently remove the showerhead from the watering can and set it aside.
Using a screwdriver (or your tool of choice), make the holes bigger on the showerhead of the watering can. In my case, I widened 9 of the holes. Place the lights inside the watering can and push them up and out of the spout.
One by one, feed the strings of fairy lights through the showerhead.
Gently place the showerhead back on the watering can. Hang the watering can on a hook. “Fluff” the lights over your garden or plans so that they look like they’re all going in the same direction. Turn on the lights and enjoy!
I JUST LOVE how it lights up the flowers in my raised garden! I like to have fun with my garden so I mix things up all of the time just to make it pretty. Right now we are growing small pumpkins (on the right) for the fall, as well as green onions, mini pink roses, and some other colorful flowers. It looks PERFECT from any angle.
My kids are mesmerized by the lights and they think it looks like magic. It really does! I would love to figure out a way to make a smaller version for a fairy garden. How magical would that be?

I found warering cans but nome with removable ends. I found a string of lites at michaels that I will make work. How do you keep rain from getting into can?
My Ace hardware store ordered them for me for a different project. They were metal with the removable spout for less than $20.
walmart has them in the garden department.

Are the fairy lights solar? And can they withstand rain and blowing dirt? Battery powered means I’d have to go outside on a daily basis and turn them off and on. 🙁
The strands u used for the watering cans, did each strand have their own battery pack? I clicked on the iconwhere it said these exact strands will work as well, but there were only 8 pack on Amazon. Did the 9 pack come in as u said they were sold out. I found a 9 pack on Amazon but each has their own battery pack. I want to make this for my sister for her b’day. Please help. Thank u.

Where do I find e the fairy lights?
I found them on Amazon and Wish.com. If you order from Wish, they do take awhile since they come from China. Mine were soft white and one set was a pale yellow LED garland so they still have a soft glow, not that blaring white type of LED lights. Wish.com had them much cheaper and free shipping but again you have to wait about 6 weeks. They are battery operated and its has the type of battery that is flat and round which came with the lights. I haven’t had to buy the batteries yet since they came with them and I don’t keep the lights on all the time. Also Lights and Décor.com have all kinds of garland and fairy lights from battery to electric ranging from $2.77 to $ 4.00. They also have them in soft white and other choices. Hope that helps.
I have made this. I used solar lights straight string lights and weaved them in and out of the holes. I made the holes bigger. My watering can has been painted white with a maple leaf on it. It turned out great. I purchased the light on Amazon. They are the LED Solar Copper String Lights. There are 2 strings in the package. The price is about $30.00
