AS SEEN ON THE DR.'s TV SHOW! Homemade Vaporizing Shower Cubes. A perfect DIY gift idea.

Did you know that there’s a Baby VapoRub? You can find it HERE. This formula is a much more gentle version of the super strong VapoRub and doesn’t contain menthol. My kids don’t like the smell at all, but I happen to love the smell for myself. It has eucalyptus, aloe vera, and fragrances like rosemary and lavender. All of that combined gives off a similar scent compared to the original VapoRub, but it’s much less overwhelming.

Vaporizing Shower Cubes

I found an incredible way to use BabyRub in the shower to create a vaporizing sensation that just happens to be perfect for soothing colds and coughs! To get started, you will need some measuring spoons and a mixing bowl. Don’t forget your ice cube tray! Pick one up at the dollar store if you don’t already have one.

The end result is beautiful! I keep mine just like this near my shower in this pretty glass cup. The steam in the shower will release a wonderful vapor effect as the cubs melt down the drain. Your entire bathroom will smell like a little spa!

If you feel a cough or cold coming on, you must try using these in the shower. While they won’t cure your cold, they will definitely help soothe any irritation you have while you shower. I love these so much! They are gorgeous, easy to make, fun to use, and are perfect DIY handmade gifts!

Homemade DIY decongestant shower melts!

Ingredients

  • ½ cup baking soda
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • 4 tablespoons BabyRub (baby VapoRub)
  • 1-3 tablespoons water

Instructions

  • Combine the baking soda and cornstarch.
  • Add in 4 tbs of the Baby Rub
  • Mix until fully combined.
  • One tablespoon at a time, mix in the water. You don’t want it to be runny because it needs to harden. If you accidentally make it too runny, that’s ok! Just add more cornstarch.
  • Pour the mixture into an ice cube tray.
  • Let it dry overnight.
  • Gently remove the cubes from the tray. They are soft and break easily, so don’t twist and turn the tray too much trying to remove them. Just a little loosening will do the trick and they will come right out.
  • Place them in the shower with hot water and steam. They will dissolve releasing the vapors to help clear your nose!

Notes

Keep them in a pretty cup (as pictured) or carefully place them in jars and hand them out as gifts!

  1. Actually when I was very young and had severe eczema
My mother would bath me with some baking soda or cornstarch in the bath water to ease the itching. She used corn starch, like baby powder in my diapers also as I was allergic to scented baby powder. I think you could use this in the bath water just keep in mind the oily Vicks might leave a bit of a slippery surface, so clean the tub Well before showering.

  2. Is the mix watery or pastey? I made this twice because the amount didn’t fill my trays and following the recipe to the tee it’s stiff and pastey, you have to spoon it into the tray there’s no pouring it in lol

    1. You’ve got it! The thick paste is what you want to aim for and spooning it into the tray is perfect. This recipe won’t make a full ice cube tray full (it will make about as many as you seen in the photos above). Just remember that it needs to dry overnight:)

    1. I think that would be really fun to try! I would think to just add a tiny bit since it goes a long way and that way you won’t worry about the shower floor being stained. But I know from experience, that a little food coloring doesn’t stain at all. Great idea!

    1. I agree that does sound relaxing, but I wouldn’t use it in the tub only because I don’t know how the other ingredients would react with skin:( It does sound divine though!! I wonder how we could make something for that??…

  3. Seems kind of dangerous to me. Not just due to the risk of slipping on the vaseline sludge left behind when getting out of the tub, but some of the ingredients can cause caustic burns when heated (like vaseline) they sell disks that make steam for like $3.

    1. It’s such a tiny amount used and you’re not literally standing on it the whole time in the shower. Plus, unless your shower is scorching hot, causing the ingredients to become scorching, you’ll be fine. This is the DIY version of something you could buy.

  4. I can’t wait to make these! I used to buy the ones you could in the stores! Thanks for sharing this!

  5. I love this idea! We buy so much of this stuff from the store and this makes even better sense. Can you substitute essential oils for the vapor or will that not work as well or take too much? Thanks 🙂

  6. Wonderful idea. Can you add any essential oils for extra smell profile? Would that mess up the caking ability?

  7. I am planning in making this for teacher gifts for the holidays. How far ahead can I make them? I was planning on placing them in blue mason jars, too. I was just curious if anything bad will happen if I make them 2-3 weeks before I give them out. Love this idea!

    1. How pretty!!! You should be just fine making them 3 weeks in advance. The ingredients are so simple that they won’t spoil that quickly:)

  8. Wow these seem simple enough to make and give as little welcome or
    Secret Santa gift!!
    Thank You

  9. Great idea! For clarification on the consistency before putting in the trays, should it be similar to toothpaste?…

    1. I wouldn’t use them in the bath because I’m not sure how the mixture of ingredients would react with direct contact to the skin in a tub. But, they are so gentle that bigger kids could use them in the shower!

  10. I’m definitely going to make these! I have both kinds of Vicks and might try 2 Tbs of each. Great idea!
Do they make the shower floor slippery? I’m graceful enough without extra challenges…

  11. is it tablespoon or teaspoon for the measurements? You have tbs for both and have a picture of a teaspoon and tablespoon. Thank you, I can’t wait to try this.

  12. How much does one tube of the vaporizer make? I was thinking of making several of these jars for gifts…I was wondering if I should buy more than one tube. I appreciate you posting this. Christmas needs to be less expensive this year-and these will be awesome.

  13. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!! I was *just* saying I wish there was a recipe … Thank you! 😀

  14. Hi, please could you confirm is corn starch the same as corn flour? Or i it something completel different? Thanks

    1. No. Cornstarch can be found in a yellow box. Corn flour is finer and won’t give you the consistency you want.

    2. Hi Emily, it’s the same thing with regular flour and starch – flour is for baking, starch is for binding products 🙂

Corn starch should be white and have a baby powder consistency while corn flour is yellow.

    3. Depending on what country you live in depends on the meaning between corn starch and corn flour. In the USA corn starch is made from only one part of the corn kernel (endosperm) and is a very fine white powder and is sold as corn starch. It is used as a thickener for gravy sand such and has a number of other uses. Corn flour is the whole corn kernel ground up and is used for baking, etc. The two are not interchangeable.

    1. You simply place a cube on the shower floor, where the shower water can go over it, and the cube slowly melts away down the drain while you shower leaving a wonderful scent in the steam:)

    1. Yes, definitely! It will make a stronger smell in the shower because the regular VapoRub is stronger. But, I love that!

  15. So when these are completed, how are they used? Do you just throw them on the shower floor? Put them in a bowl in the shower? I assume the shower water is meant to get them wet and melt them.
    Thanks!
