I stuffed the little dough balls with cheese before forming the dough into the shape of a Christmas tree (optional, you can add pepperoni or protein in THIS Pull Apart Christmas Tree Recipe). For the cheese, I used a combination of mozzarella, sharp cheddar, and pepper jack. Not into spicy cheese? Consider using Colby jack cheese instead! Each cheesy ball is made out of 1/2 of an uncooked Grands biscuit. You could also use crescent roll dough or refrigerated pizza dough.

The buttery glaze that is brushed on top is made with melted butter and just the right amount of garlic powder. You could also use fresh garlic or minced garlic depending on how much you love garlic. The Pull-Apart Christmas Tree bread is topped with finely shredded mozzarella, finely chopped spinach, and chunks of cherry tomatoes. Cherry tomatoes are my favorite to use because they add SO much color and flavor while the texture is perfect in every bite.

Ingredients:

  • mozzarella cheese sticks (string cheese)
  • sharp cheddar cheese sticks
  • pepper jack cheese sticks
  • refrigerated Pillsbury Grands Homestyle Buttermilk Biscuits
  • butter
  • garlic powder
  • diced cherry tomatoes
  • baby spinach
  • finely shredded mozzarella cheese
  • pretzel sticks
String cheese cut into 4 pieces

First, decide which kind of string cheese you want to use. If you just want one kind of cheese, we recommend mozzarella. Cut each string cheese into 4 pieces.

Next, remove the 8 Grands buttermilk biscuits from the container. Separate each piece of biscuit dough in half, making 16 pieces for each container of Grands biscuits. They split in half very easily! Next, put 2 pieces of the same type of cheese in the middle of each piece of dough. Fold the dough around the cheese, pinch it shut, and shape it to make a nice round tightly sealed ball.

Instructions:

Arrange the uncooked cheese-filled dough balls into a Christmas tree shape. For this recipe, you have two options. If you want to make a large tree, you will need a large 18x 14 baking sheet. In this case, your bottom row on the Christmas Tree Pull-Apart Bread will have 7 pieces.

On the other hand, if you don’t have a large enough baking sheet, you can make two smaller baking sheets to create two Christmas Trees. In this case, the smaller trees will have 5 pieces at the bottom of the Christmas tree. If you only want to make one small tree, simply cut the recipe in half (full recipe below). Whichever size tree you make, just be sure to place the dough balls seam-side down.

Top the uncooked Christmas tree with a melted buttery glaze! In a small bowl, melt the butter and mix in the seasonings. Then, sprinkle on finely shredded mozzarella. Finally, top it with red and green! We chopped baby spinach into small pieces (kitchen scissors make this job super easy) and diced cheery tomatoes. Now it’s ready to bake! Cook it for 30 minutes or until the edges are golden brown and the middle of the tree is baked.

Once it is done, gently slide it off the parchment paper onto a pretty cutting board or serving dish. Then, take your finely shredded mozzarella and sprinkle it around the outside of the tree for an adorable snowy effect! Create the tree trunk with a handful of pretzel sticks… SO CUTE!

  • 6 mozzarella cheese sticks (string cheese)
  • 5 sharp cheddar cheese sticks
  • 5 pepper jack cheese sticks
  • 2 containers of refrigerated Pillsbury Grands Homestyle Buttermilk Biscuits
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • cup diced cherry tomatoes (I cut each tomato into 4 pieces)
  • cup finely diced baby spinach. Use kitchen scissors to make this part easy!
  • ¼ cup finely shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Pretzel sticks

  • Preheat oven to 350°
  • Cut each cheese stick into 4 pieces, making 64 pieces
  • Remove the buttermilk biscuits from their containers and split them in half, making 32 circles of dough
  • Flatten the dough circles
  • Place two piece of the same kind of cheese in the middle of each piece of dough
  • Pinch the dough together and roll the dough in your hands to make perfect circles
  • Place parchment paper on baking sheet(s)
  • For one large tree, use the large baking sheet and start with 7 cheese filled dough balls for the bottom of the tree. For two small trees, use 5 cheese fill dough balls for the bottom of the Christmas tree.
  • Working upwards, place 1 less dough ball in each layer until you get to the top of the tree (as seen in the video)
  • Microwave the butter until fully melted
  • Stir in the garlic powder
  • Using a basting brush, cover the Christmas tree(s) with the buttery, garlicky glaze
  • Sprinkle finely shredded mozzarella over the uncooked tree
  • Top with spinach and tomatoes
  • For any cheese or spinach that fell onto the parchment paper, push it under the uncooked dough balls (or remove it altogether).
  • Bake for 30 minutes or until the dough is golden and the center of the tree is fully cooked. For a larger tree, this could be around 34 minutes.
  • Gently slide the cooked tree onto a large cutting board or serving dish
  • Sprinkle more finely shredded mozzarella around the tree (optional)
  • Place a handful of pretzel sticks under the tree to create the tree trunk
  • Serve with warm with dips of choice: marinara sauce, ranch dressing, or spinach dip

Notes

If you just want to make one small tree, cut the entire recipe in half:)
