3 Things to Remember During the Holidays

The 3 Most Important things We Often Forget During the Holidays

The holidays are my favorite! The cold weather, the warm homes, scrumptious food, the beautiful snow and, of course, Santa! Magic happens when children see Santa. We prepare for the night he quietly sneaks to our Christmas trees. As parents, we try our hardest to not leave a single detail behind. We write him letters, we bake him cookies, we even leave food for his reindeer. As parents, we create so many memories for our families! The excitement makes me giddy already!

The 3 most important things we often forget during the holidays

That being said, the holidays can be THEE most stressful time of year, agreed? Yes, we will be responsible for fulfilling many Christmas lists, yes we will be invited to numerous parties, and yes we will feel the pressure to spend, spend, spend! Why do we do that to ourselves and why does it sometimes feel harder each year? I’ve teamed up with Sun Trust Bank to open up some meaningful conversation about financial well-being this holiday season. Let me tell you- our conversations were not just about money. Instead, we discussed depositing hope instead of checks and withdrawing stress instead of cash. Sound familiar? We’ve all been there! Let’s not repeat the cycle this year. Sun Trust Bank and I have created 3 things to remember and we’ll explain why we think these 3 things will help us all enjoy a more meaningful holiday season. The things that mean most to us, are well within our means!

Let’s be meaningful within our means.

Remember YOU During the Holidays

Make time for yourself: This is often something I forget to do (you too?). Creating time for myself takes so much coordination for the family that it’s sometimes easier to not do it at all!

Liberate: No one’s holiday is going to be enjoyable if you are not able to enjoy it yourself.

Let go of perfectionism.

Manage expectations early on: This is one that can have the biggest impact to your budget and communicate the expectations early so that everyone is on board.

Togetherness During the Holidays

Being with family and friends is what the holidays are all about. This year I’d like to plan one activity for my family each week that is FREE. One of my favorite memories as a child was driving around with my family looking at Christmas lights. I’m so excited to do that this year with my kids! We also plan on making our Christmas tree ornaments with craft and baking supplies that we already have on in the house. Handmade gifts are the most meaningful, especially when they’re from friends and family! Last year we made jam together with fruit from our trees, this year we’ll be making ornaments!

The Importance of Giving During the Holidays

This is a great time to teach children the importance of giving. My daughter’s school adopted a family this year. I’m going to use this opportunity to teach my little ones about giving, without receiving praise. In an attempt to give positive reinforcement for positive behaviors, I find myself praising my children for every. little. thing. they. do. While that is totally acceptable in some cases, the holidays provide a perfect opportunity to teach the importance of giving from our heart. To give without receiving in return. To THINK about how they can help. To give meaningfully.

Let’s begin planning for the holidays now and reduce our stress starting today. Let’s plan, let’s me meaningful and let’s not forget the 3 most important things during the holidays: You, Togetherness, and Giving
