DIY Shower Cleaner

Make DIY shower cleaner with Dawn and vinegar using just 2 ingredients.
Prep Time5 minutes
Total Time5 minutes
Servings: 1 cup

Ingredients

  • ½ cup Dawn liquid dish soap
  • ½ cup distilled white vinegar, 5% acidity

Instructions

  • Prepare the Area

Remove bottles and accessories from the area you plan to clean. Check that no other cleaning product remains on the surface.
  • Apply a Small Amount

Dampen your non-scratch sponge or dish wand and spread a thin layer over a small section of a compatible surface.
A little goes a long way. Using more cleaner means more suds to rinse away.
  • Gently Scrub

Work the sponge over the soap residue using light pressure. Focus on areas where shampoo, conditioner, and body-wash residue collect.
Avoid abrasive pads or aggressive scrubbing. For stubborn buildup, follow your surface manufacturer’s recommended cleaning method instead of leaving vinegar on for an extended soak.
  • Rinse Thoroughly

Rinse with clean water until all cleaner and suds are gone. Pay special attention to the shower floor, corners, and any areas where the mixture has run down.
Dish soap can leave the floor slippery, so complete rinsing is essential.
  • Dry the Surface

Use a squeegee or clean microfiber cloth to remove the remaining water from compatible glass and walls. Drying also makes it easier to see whether any soap residue remains.

Notes

What is the ratio of Dawn to vinegar for shower cleaner?

This recipe uses one part Dawn dish soap to one part white vinegar. For example, combine ½ cup of each to make 1 cup of cleaner.

Can I use this on glass shower doors?

Only if your shower-door manufacturer allows vinegar and dish soap. Some doors have protective coatings with specific cleaning requirements.
If the cleaner is approved for your glass, use a soft, non-scratch sponge, rinse thoroughly, and dry with a squeegee or microfiber cloth.

Does Dawn and vinegar help with hard water stains?

Vinegar can help loosen some mineral deposits, while dish soap helps lift oily residue. However, this mixture may not remove heavy or longstanding deposits.
If cloudiness remains after cleaning, check your shower manufacturer’s recommendations. Not every cloudy mark is removable buildup.

Is this a daily no-rinse shower spray?

No. This equal-parts mixture contains a substantial amount of dish soap and must be rinsed away after every use.
For everyday upkeep, remove excess water with a squeegee. Use a no-rinse product only if it is specifically designed for that purpose and approved for your shower.

Do I need to heat the vinegar?

No. This recipe combines the ingredients at room temperature, making it easy to prepare directly in a suitable container or dish-wand reservoir.

Can I use it on marble or other natural stone?

Skip this vinegar-based recipe for natural stone. Choose a cleaner specifically approved for your stone and follow the supplier’s care instructions.

Does this homemade cleaner disinfect the shower?

Do not rely on this mixture as a disinfectant. Cleaning and disinfecting are different tasks. When disinfection is needed, use an appropriate EPA-registered disinfectant according to its label, and never mix it with this cleaner.
