I’ve been asked a few times about the pretty tin can lantern I made last month that was published in All You Magazine. You can see it HERE. The Senior Style editor of the magazine contacted me and asked if I would be up for a crafting challenge. That’s my kind of thing! It had to be a craft made out of a tin can and cost under $5. They then had my lil crafty craft shipped off to New York for the magazine photo shoot. SO fun! I figured that it would be a neat idea to explain how I made it and what in spired me.

Ok, here’s the biggest secret of all for this tin can craft. It’s made with plastic spoons!

My friendly competition for the challenge was Heather Mann of Dollar Store Crafts. You can see us both in this awesome magazine that can be found in stores nationwide (even in Target now I hear…love me some Target!)

And I’m going to stop right there and show you the inside of the magazine because it was #ReallyFunToPointOutToEveryone
I’m sitting pretty next to royalty:)

Ok-
Back to the craft:
Do any of you remember my DIY Flameless Rose Tea Lights? You can see them HERE
My inspiration for this tin can lantern came from that DIY project!
All you need are a few simple materials:
Fabric Rose Petals
Plastic Spoons
Glue Gun
Tin Can
Flameless Candle
The directions for the tin can lantern are the same as the directions for the rose tea lights. Except, instead of gluing the spoons to the tea light, you’ll be gluing the spoons to the outside of the tin can! Easy peasy lemon squeezy!
Simply follow these directions below which are from the DIY Flameless Rose Tea Lights  (and psssst: start at the top of the can and work you way down)

And there you have it! A beautiful floral tin can lantern! I made mine ombre by using lighter petals at the top. The rose tea lights were such a popular craft on Pinterest (pinned thousands of times…more to come on that later, so stay tuned!) and I had SO much fun brining it back to life with this project. Oh- and being published in a magazine was cool too. I may or may not have framed the magazine and hung it in my craft room:)

  1. HELLO HEATHER, YOUR TIN CAN LANTERN IS AMAZING . I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THIS LATERN CAN BE MADE WITHOUT THE PLASTIC SPOONS, WHAT SIZE CAN IS USED AND IF A CANDLE CAN BE PUT IN IT FOR OUTSIDE USE. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP.

  2. I am very confused. You said to follow the directions for the tealights. So you only glue spoons to the top of the can do go all around the top right?
Then you just add the petals around to bottom of can or do you add more spoons covered in rose petals? It’s probably very easy but if I can’t picture it I can’t make it.
Please help!!! I love your ideas.

    1. First glue the petals to the spoons. Then, starting at the top of the can, glue the spoons around. Keep going around and around until you reach the bottom of the can. If any of the can is showing, you can glue on extra rose petals (without spoons) to cover it up.I hope that helps! Let me know if you have questions:)

  3. Its beautiful…I am really very much impressed to see this innovative creation. I could be a very beautiful piece of decor for any occasion.
