Playroom Decorating Ideas

You might have seen me tease about this amazing DIY wood crate toy organization on Instagram a few weeks ago. It is the highlight of our playroom right now! The crates transformed from unfinished wood boxes in a craft store to a colorfully fun, smart, and functioning toy storage solution! I purchased the string of wire lights here for about $6.00. They are the perfect finishing touch!

I’m beyond thrilled that summer is here and we are constantly outside playing in the warm weather. When my kids are ready for some quiet play time, we usually end up in our playroom. I realized that our toy organization had become a little scattered. So, while they were calmly playing in the playroom one afternoon, I decided to tackle a colorful summertime DIY project.

Play Room Decorating Ideas: Wood Crate Toy Storage

I’m kind of in love my final product. It is so incredibly colorful, very sturdy and holds so much. I even adorned it with some thin string wire lights for an extra cute factor (which is a fun idea if your kids are bigger).

To get started, I picked up six wood crates from my craft store and primed the unfinished wood. Once the primer was dry, I taped off the edges because my plan was to only paint color on the inside of each crate. Then, I painted the outside and the edges of each crate with White on White paint and that was it.

Once the wood crates were completely dry, I connected them with simple metal brackets and bolts found at my hardware store. Although it isn’t necessary to connect them with metal brackets and bolts, it all depends on where you want to keep them, how you want to display them, and who will be using them (in this case, it’s for my kids so I wanted it to be sturdy). Then, I strung the cute lights along the top.

Don’t you think this is the cutest way to organize and display toys? Both of my kids actually helped pick out what we would put in each crate and I finally found a spot in the playroom that can be dedicated to charging the kids’ tablets and other electronics. Our playroom has never looked better (or more colorful). I love DIY summer projects.
