Red, White, and Blue Cupcake Cones

Red, White, and Blue Cupcake Cones

I’m not really sure where to start with these. They are, by far, the coolest cupcakes I’ve ever made! They look like an ice cream cone but they have cupcake and frosting inside. And, no, I did not bake the cupcakes inside the cones like I’ve seen done on Pinterest. That is an awesome idea, but, I’m not that talented or patient! Get ready because these red, white, and blue cupcake cones are so easy that your kids can make them! <—I love that.

Red, White, and Blue Cupcake Cones! So easy that I can't believe I didn't think of this sooner..

For the cupcakes recipe, you will need:

  • Ice cream cones
  • White cake mix with blue food coloring or pre-made  blue cake mix (I saw it at Target once)

Bake the cake mix according to the box. If you’re using white cake mix (like I did) then simply add some blue food coloring to the mix before baking it. When it is done, crumble it up (yup, that’s what I said) and stuff it into the ice cream cone, like so:

For the buttercream frosting you will need:

  • 3 cups of powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup of softened butter
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons of milk (more or less depending on the consistency you want)
  • An electric mixer
  • Large ziplock bag
  • Frosting tips (optional)

To make homemade butter cream frosting, simply combine the softened butter with the powdered sugar. Once it is mixed, add in the milk. Using either an official frosting bag with a fancy tip, or just a ziplock bag with the corner cut off, pipe the frositng onto the top of the cones. I even think you could be REALLY smart and buy some pre-made white frosting if you’re short on time (aren’t well all?).

Add a red cherry on top and you are DONE! We picked these cherries off of our cherry tree. But, you can find cherries in the grocery stores from spring-fall.

These pretty cupcakes are so festive and fun. Just look how adorable they are:

Bite in and you have yourself a glorious cupcake! Just buttercream frosting and cake. You can bet I’ll be making these for every holiday to come…..errr…my kids will be making them.

    1. That’s a great question! I did a little experimenting with this. If you look closely at the photo, the cake doesn’t go all the way to the top. The frosting covers a good portion on the top of the cone. This prevents it from crumbling out while you eat it. So, imagine eating an ice cream cone. Once you get to that part of the cone, the ice cream doesn’t come falling out because it’s held inside the base of the cone. Easy peasy! I hope that helps:)

  1. I’m pretty sure it would be just as easy to bake them in the cone if you just stand them in a muffin tin and fill them to the same level. Maybe easier. I don’t like the crumbly cake idea so much.

    1. Oh no, I disagree from experience. I’ve tried baking cupcakes in cones and this is way easier! Besides, these cupcakes cones are less crumbly than eating a cupcake in a paper liner (notice that the cone is more sturdy than a liner). But, since you don’t like the idea of crumbly cake, then maybe this recipe isn’t for you. Take care, Lacey!

  2. I am planning on making these for a family get together post Idepence day. While reading over your recipe my mother and I disscorved that these would be difficult to transport. Any ideas??

    1. Hi Julia! These will melt just like a popsicle, so I would transport them in a very cold ice chest of some sort that would keep popsicles very frozen.
