Home odors can be caused by so many different things and personally I can’t stand smelling last night’s dinner first thing in the morning. But, sometimes lingering smells are just hard to get rid of, especially if it’s too chilly to open up windows and allow a nice breeze to drift through the house. I enjoy making this natural air freshener in my kitchen to make everything smell beautiful again.

Natural Air Freshener - DIY air freshener recipe that is non-toxic and free of harsh chemicals. It makes your house smell just like Pottery Barn or Williams Sonoma! This simmering potpourri is made with 3 ingredients including rosemary and lemon.

Natural Air Freshener

While it seems like we’ve all been experiencing an extra long winter this year, it sure does feel good knowing that warmer weather is just around the corner. I’ve been cold at night and in the morning, but the second the sun heats up, I’ve been opening every window in sight! Doesn’t it feel good to have that warm air back? Enough with the winter months already!

If you like the smell of William Sonoma or Pottery Barn, this one is for you. The citrusy, crisp, clean and comforting smell that comes from this DIY natural air freshener is welcoming and a bit addicting. I have 2 of the 3 ingredients growing in my backyard, and come to think of it, I’ve had these 2 ingredients growing in the backyard of the past 3 homes we’ve lived in. Rosemary and lemons are my favorite! They smell good when they’re growing, they look pretty, and both are great to cook with.

It just so happens that rosemary and lemons are also nature’s way of making your house smell good again too:)

How to Make a Homemade Air Freshener

  1. Slice the lemon
  2. Put the water in a pot or pan
  3. Add the sliced lemon and rosemary springs to the water
  4. Add the vanilla to the water
  5. Turn the stove on to “simmer”
  6. Add water as needed because the water will evaporate as it simmers
  7. This can be simmered for up to 2 days. After that make a new batch and start again!

I love that it is non-toxic and free of the harsh chemicals found in air fresheners you can buy at the store. This is also called a simmering potpourri. I think this particular fresh lemon and vanilla scent works for spring and summer. If you’re looking for another great simmering potpourri recipe but for the colder months of fall and winter, check out our other natural air freshener recipe that has cinnamon, nutmeg, and apples. It smells SO DELICIOUS!
