Ingredients:
- A gallon of white vinegar
- Dawn Dish Soap
- Salt

Vinegar. Acetic acid, the main component of vinegar, kills weeds by disrupting plant cells, causing them to dry out. A 30% acetic acid vinegar solution, also known as horticultural vinegar, is an effective weed killer, especially for tough weeds. It is available at Home Depot or Lowe’s (or here on Amazon). It’s stronger than household vinegar (5% acetic acid) and is more effective at killing weeds.

Salt. Salt kills weeds by dehydrating them. When salt comes into contact with plant tissues, it draws moisture out of the plant, causing it to dehydrate and eventually die. One quarter cup of table salt is all it takes!
- A complete list of supplies and ingredients can be found at the very end of this post. It’s printable and interactive, too!

Dawn Dish Soap. A tablespoon of liquid dish soap enhances the absorption of the vinegar and salt into the weed. Dish soap also helps the solution cling to and penetrate weed leaves.

How to Use Herbicides
- Combine Ingredients: Mix the vinegar, salt, and dish soap in a spray bottle or a one-gallon pump garden sprayer.
- Spray: Shake and apply the solution directly to the weeds on a sunny day for best results.
- Repeat: Sometimes one layer isn’t enough. You may need to repeat the process multiple times for more persistent weeds and vegetation. Repeating the process also prevents the germination of future growth.

Natural weed killers are effective for weed control in cracks, driveways, mulch, gravel, or anywhere you need to create a weed barrier.
However, please keep it away from flowers, grass, your lawn, or gardens that you want to grow, as all DIY weed killers can also harm them.
