Garbage Disposal Cleaning Tabs

After your garbage disposal does your dirty work, freshen it up with these icy cleaning cubes. Since their whole purpose is to break up food and flush it down the drain, garbage disposals are usually pretty good at cleaning themselves. But after a while, food and bacteria can start to build up. Once this happens, the funky smells are sure to follow. A once-a-week cleaning tab is all you need to keep it clean and odor-free.

Garbage Disposal Cleaning Ingredients

Supplies:

  • Lemons
  • Limes
  • Vinegar
  • 1 or 2 Ice Cube Trays
Sliced lemons and limes

Even though you are running water while using your disposal, some of the food gets left behind. It’s a good idea to clean and deodorize the disposal with this natural citrus vinegar recipe as well. These homemade garbage disposal cleaner tablets will help clean your disposal and leave it smelling fresh and clean too!

Vinegar and lemons and limes for garbage disposal

Instructions:

Cut the lemons and limes into small chunks, put a piece in each ice cube cavity, then fill each cavity with vinegar. Place the trays in the freezer, then once the cubes are frozen, transfer them to a container or ziplock freezer bag.

When you are ready to freshen up your garbage disposal, toss a tab into your sink with the garbage disposal and water running. Each cleaning requires between 1-3 cubes to achieve your desired fresh citrus scent.

Why not keep them in the ice cube trays?

You will notice that the freezer will have a temporary vinegar smell while the cubes are freezing. Putting the cleaning tabs in a container or freezer bag will contain the vinegar smell within your freezer. I purchased both the ice cube trays and clear storage containers at Walmart (in the same aisle!).

Garbage Disposal Tips:

  • If you don’t have lemons or limes on hand but your garbage disposal needs deodorizing, use two tablespoons of vanilla, orange, or lemon extract instead.
  • Don’t pour grease into your garbage disposal, because it will stick to the blades and eventually create odor problems. If grease is accidentally poured down the drain, rinse immediately with a lot of hot water and dish soap.
