Hawaiian Punch Play Dough
I don’t even know where to begin. This stuff is awesome! Do you remember drinking Hawaiian Punch as a kid? Well, now they sell Hawaiian Punch juice mix in individual powder packets. When I spotted the packets at the store, I immediately had an idea: Hawaiian Punch play dough! There is always time in our schedule to make play dough! It’s so easy to make and it’s completely edible, which makes it great for very young kids who happen to put everything in their mouths (and that is normal, it’s simply part of the learning process). Bigger kids will LOVE this too though! It’s soft, squishy, and tropical smelling!
While you’re picking up the individual Hawaiian Punch powder drink packets from the store, hop on over to the baking isle and grab a couple containers of pre-made white frosting (not the whipped kind). I enhanced the color of the dough with a tiny bit of food coloring. This is totally optional, but if you want to do it too, be sure to have it on hand before you start. Without the food coloring, the play dough turns out very pretty too! Just imagine it with lighter hues as seen in my pictures. Finally you need powdered sugar.
- Hawaiian Punch powder drink packets (in desired colors/flavors)
- White pre-made frosting
- Powdered sugar
- Food coloring (optional)
Using the flat beater attachment on your electric mixer (like a kitchen aid), combine:
- 1 cup of pre-made white frosting
- 2 3/4 cups of powdered sugar
Add the powdered sugar to the frosting in slow increments, continually scraping the sides of the bowl. Use a slow speed on your mixer (no need to go too fast because this dough is pretty thick). Before you add all of the powdered sugar, touch the play dough and, if it feels at all sticky, add the rest of the powered sugar in. Considering that it is kind of hard to measure exactly one cup of frosting, you might have to eye ball the last quarter cup of powdered sugar that is necessary for this play dough. Another thing to consider is that all brands of pre-made frosting are slightly different. So, the amount of powdered sugar you need will range anywhere from 2 3/4 cups to 3 cups. It WILL take a lot more powdered sugar that it looks like though (just continue to test the “stickyness” and say no to sticky play dough).
Separate the dough into however many colors and flavors you want to make. In this case I made 3 different colors. Put one part back into the mixer and add 1 packet of Hawaiian Punch powder to it. You can add 2-3 packets of Hawaiian depending on how you are splitting up the main mixture- it’s no fail! I love easy things like this! Mix it until the powder is thoroughly combined (adding a tiny bit of food coloring to enhance the color if you want). Quickly clean the mixer and do the same thing for the next color. Repeat the process for however many colors and flavors you want!
Roll your Hawaiian Punch play dough into sections and make sure they are not crumbly or sticky. If, by chance, you added a little too much powdered sugar, don’t worry! We aren’t perfect! Simply sprinkle a little olive oil onto the play dough and BOOM! Problem solved!
Here’s a tip: tape down some wax paper underneath your kids while they are playing with the play dough. This simply makes the clean up much faster:) Soap and water is all you need to clean everything up- even if you don’t use the wax paper. If the dough begins to dry out while your kids are playing with it, add a dab of olive oil to the dough and it will soften right back up. So easy!
Store your Hawaiian Punch dough in a zip lock bag in the refrigerator. When your kids want to play with it again, leave it out for 30 minutes to warm and reach room temperature (it will harden in the fridge). When it is at room temperature, add a little olive oil to the dough if necessary and get right back to playing!
