Chocolate Toffee Pretzel Bark - Salty, sweet, buttery PERFECTION!

Chocolate Toffee Pretzel Bark

These are the perfect treat for pretty much any occasion (like being bored at home in quarantine!). I like to make them for a cookie exchange during Christmas because people go crazy over this chocolate bark. They’d also be perfect for Valentine’s Day. But let’s be honest, you really don’t need any excuse at all–just a sweet tooth and a few minutes of your time.  Enjoy!

Ingredients:

  1. Mini twisted pretzels
  2. semi sweet chocolate chips
  3. chopped walnuts
  4. butter
  5. brown sugar

Let’s break it down so you can see how EASY Chocolate Toffee Pretzel Bark is to make. Begin by lining a baking sheet with parchment paper. We use parchment paper for all of our baking because nothing sticks to it. This is particularly useful when making toffee. Then, pour an even layer of mini twisted pretzels on top of the parchment paper.

How to Make Toffee

In a saucepan over medium/low heat, melt two sticks of butter with one cup of brown sugar. The brown sugar does something magical at this point… it turns into toffee! The granulated sugar eventually dissolves completely as the sugar-butter mixture begins to bubble and boil. Once bubbly, pour the hot toffee over the pretzels. Don’t worry if it doesn’t cover every pretzel perfectly, a few minutes in the oven fixes that.

See that? The bubbly hot toffee melts even more in the oven and manages to cover each pretzel perfectly. Careful though! The toffee is still VERY hot at this point, so even though brown sugar and butter smell so good when it turns into toffee, you have to wait for it to cool:) Now, things get even MORE fun! Pour an entire bag of chocolate chips over the melted toffee pretzel mixture. Yup, an entire bag!

Christmas crack recipe - chocolate toffee pretzel bark

If you have watched the video then you know how magical this next step is… Place the baking sheet in the oven for another minute, then take a spatula and spread the melted chips into a layer of liquid chocolate amazingness. This step is so satisfying and fun! Bigger kids love doing this part of the recipe too. One of my kids (I won’t mention which one) begs to eat the chocolate off the spatula afterward. YUM!

Before the chocolate hardens, sprinkle some chopped walnuts on top. Of course, this step is optional but I happen to LOVE the extra bits and pieces of crunch and salt on top of the chocolate and toffee. It makes the chocolate toffee pretzel bark looks fancier with the little chopped nuts too (that extra touch always goes a long way when you’re making it for others!). During Christmas, consider skipping the walnuts and sprinkling crushed candy canes on top!

The very last step is the easiest of all. Just pop the baking sheet in the refrigerator or the freezer and let the chocolate toffee bark harden. Once it’s no longer melted, grab the sides of the parchment paper and remove the bark from the baking sheet. With clean hands, break the HUGE piece of bark into smaller pieces. Again, kids are great at this job:) It’s ready to enjoy! Chewy, buttery, toffee mixed with sweet and salty chocolate pretzels. It’s addicting!
