Knowing how to make your own mozzarella sticks is a dangerous thing. At any moment, you could whip up your very own sticks of warm and creamy mozzarella surrounded in perfectly fried Italian batter. Comfort food you say? Yes. And it’s very, very dangerous to know how easy they are to make:) Here’s how to do it:

Ooey gooey and creamy homemade mozzarella sticks surrounded in perfectly fried Italian batter. This is a  fun and easy appetizer or snack option that’s even better than what you would get at a restaurant. Today my kids wanted to make them as a snack and so we decided to share the recipe since they’re so simple to whip up.

Make them as an appetizer for your next party. They’re especially perfect for Super Bowl! But, they will be the first appetizer to disappear. So, if you’re making them for a group of people, you might want to double or triple the recipe. But, if you’re trying to control yourself (since mozzarella is somehow so magically easy to consume), this recipe makes only 12 pieces so it’s easier to not overdo it LOL! Although today, 12 pieces were not enough for 3 kids and myself. I probably should have doubled the recipe today because kids LOVE these!

The EASIEST Way to Make Mozzarella Cheese Sticks

Mozzarella Sticks

Not only do kids gobble up fried cheese sticks in the blink of an eye, what I love most is that this mozzarella cheese stick recipe is SO easy that the kids do most of the work themselves. As you can see in the video, kids are able to cut the cheese sticks and roll them in both the egg and breadcrumbs. Of course, the frying part of the recipe is definitely the job for an adult. I’d say it takes about 1 minute to fry these up, so it’s a quick process.

I just can’t get enough of the creamy fried cheese bites of heaven! Using this recipe, you’ll be able to have a super cheesy and crunchy appetizer that’s a hit at all the parties or get togethers. We do not freeze our mozzarella sticks beforehand. Instead, we double coat them and then fry them in a thin layer of oil in a pan (as seen in the video) as opposed to dunking them in an entire pot of oil. If you want to dip them into a pot full of oil, I do suggest that you freeze the cheese sticks on a cookie sheet for 20-30 minutes first.

HOW TO MAKE MOZZARELLA STICKS

Homemade mozzarella sticks only take about 20 minutes from start to finish!

COAT – Prepare bowls for breading your mozzarella sticks. In one bowl, whisk the eggs. Pour the Italian bread crumbs in a second bowl. Unwrap cheese sticks and cut them in half.

FRY – Heat canola or vegetable oil in a frying pan. Place the sticks in the oil and fry until golden brown on all sides (rotating the sticks twice which takes about 60 seconds total). Placed the fried sticks on layered paper towels on top of a plate. The paper towels will absorb the extra oil.

Serve immediately with marinara sauce or ranch dressing.

You Will Need

  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup of Italian bread crumbs
  • 6 mozzarella string cheese sticks
  • Oil
    • Enough to cover the bottom of a large frying pan as seen in the video
  • Optional: warm marinara sauce or cold ranch dressing

Other Supplies Needed:

  • 2 small bowls
  • Whisk
  • Frying pan
  • Paper towels
  • Plates
  • Knife
  • Tongs

Directions

  1. Cut the mozzarella cheese sticks in half
  2. Whisk both eggs in one bowl
  3. Add breadsticks to second bowl
  4. Roll each cheese stick in the egg
  5. Then roll each stick into the bread crumbs
  6. Repeat steps #4 and #5 at least twice until the cheese sticks are covered in batter
  7. Warm oil in the frying pan over medium heat until it is hot (not bubbling, but hot enough to fry)
  8. Once the oil is hot, reduce the heat to medium low and place the prepared cheese sticks into the hot oil
    1. They should begin to fry instantly
  9. Turn the cheese sticks over (about 2-3 times) until they are fried all around. This only takes about a minute or so because they fry quickly!
  10. Place the fried sticks on a stack of paper towels. The excess oil will absorb into the paper towels
  11. Enjoy warm!
    1. Consider dipping them into warm marinara sauce or cold ranch dressing

TIP: If you want to dip them into a pot full of oil, I do suggest that you freeze the cheese sticks on a cookie sheet for 20-30 minutes first.

Be careful! When you’re working with hot oil,  be VERY careful when you’re dropping the sticks in and removing them. Use long handled tongs and a gentle touch works well.
