Dollar Store Christmas Doll House

Gingerbread houses are traditionally made with edible supplies, like gingerbread or graham crackers. We love decorating gingerbread houses, but they don’t last very long! If you’re looking for gingerbread houses that last year after year, this craft is for you!

Each doll house can be decorated uniquely, so be creative. No two houses are the same! I love grouping the doll houses to make a little town. Look at how cute they look glowing in the snow at night!

Plastic doll house from the dollar store

The dollar store has small plastic doll houses and the rest of your supplies can be found at any craft store. The little decorations I used are technically miniature Christmas tree ornaments with the hanging string cut off. Consider using scrapbook supplies, buttons, or anything you have on hand!

Supplies

Instructions:

This craft starts by spray painting the houses with primer. The primer paint allows the colorful acrylic paint to stick to the plastic. If you skip this step, the acrylic paint will not adhere to the houses. The primer dries pretty fast.

Next, it’s time to transform the doll houses into gingerbread Christmas houses! Use any acrylic paint color you like. I chose brown, for a traditional gingerbread house, as well as pink, teal, and red. Consider painting the rooftops white, or a different color from the rest of the house.

Once the acrylic paint has dried, use white puffy paint to create snow effects on the houses. Be creative! On the brown house, I did a traditional icing roof, but I love the brick roof on the red house! Sprinkle the fine glitter over the wet puffy paint. Allow the puffy paint time to dry.

Finally, decorate the Christmas doll houses with various ornaments and craft supplies. I gave each house a little theme. Which house do you like the most?

This pink candy house has colorful gumdrops on the roof and small ones on the side. The small gumdrops were from a gumdrop garland made for a miniature Christmas tree.

This cute teal house has a theme of icicles, snowflakes, and candy canes. I made the icicles by placing a dot of puffy paint on the roof and using the tip of the container to pull down some paint from the dot.

The red brick Christmas house is topped with plastic mints. A green wreath adorns the front door, and I just love the cute gingerbread girl and boy out front. So cute!
