When Kelly asked me if I’d be interested in guest posting I was so thrilled and when she asked if I could come up with something for Valentine’s Day I was even more thrilled because I’ve been meaning to get this post up on my own blog for the last few weeks now and it was the perfect chance to share it with all you wonderful readers at Smart School House. Today for my post I’m going to show how to make a Valentine’s Day Love Bug for your sweetie!
Love Bug Craft
The idea for this project came to me in a dream and I have had it in my head since New Years and have only just gotten around to actually making the little guy! These cute little Love Bugs are SO simple to make and don’t require a lot of materials – mostly what every crafter has around anyway! Plus they are a great project to make with the kiddos to give to family, friends and classmates! The fact that they take so little time and materials to make means you can make a fun little Love Bug for all your classmates, siblings, family and friends!
To make your Valentine’s Love Bug you’ll need:
- Yarn/wool – use whatever you can get your hands on, cheap stuff is GREAT!
- Pipe cleaners
- Wiggle eyes – if you are out like I was you can use adhesive pearls and draw the pupils on
- Scraps of felt
- Hot glue gun and sticks
And that’s it! In just a few simple steps you have a cute little fluffy pal to share with your sweetheart/s. I paired my gorgeous little Love Bug – who I named Candy with a yummy sweet treat. Everyone can get in on the Love Bug fun this Valentine’s Day!

I hope you enjoyed this little tutorial on how to make these cuties. I seriously love mine every time I walk past her I smile. They are so cute and inviting it just makes me want to make millions of them and hand them out to strangers on the street!

You Will Need
- Pom Pom Maker
- Yarn/wool – use whatever you can get your hands on, cheap stuff is GREAT!
- Pipe cleaners
- Wiggle eyes – if you are out like I was you can use adhesive pearls and draw the pupils on
- Scraps of felt
- Hot glue gun and sticks
Directions
- Using your pom pom maker tool, create various poms in color of choice with yarn
- Start by making and fluffing/trimming your pom-pom.
- Cut your scrap of felt into a heart shape. It doesn’t have to be perfect as these are going to be the Love Bug’s feet.
- Place your pom-pom on the pointed end of the heart and arrange until you can see the two round edges poking out from under the pom-pom. Place a blob of hot glue on the pointed end and glue into place. Make sure your flatten down the ‘hair’ so he/she can sit properly!
- Cut your pipe cleaners into 1 -1.5 inch lengths and curl the ends into a small spiral. You can leave them straight, make them into hearts – anything, these Love Bugs are great to personalize!
- Now add your antenna. Wrap a blob of hot glue around the end of one of the pipe cleaners and stick it into the pom-pom. I moved some of the ‘hair’ around first beforehand so it was straight. Repeat with the other antenna.
- Gently move around some of the ‘hair’ in the front where you want your eyes to go so they don’t end up hanging on the end of a yarn hair and scaring the kiddies! Place a small amount of glue on the back of the eye and gently press it into place. If you’re using pearls like me make sure to draw on a pupil in the centre of the eye – it looks creepy if you don’t, trust me!
Awww!!!! Absolute cuteness! Love it!
